A Clinical Study of Benign Breast Lesions



Abstract
A clinical study was made on 117 cases of benign breast lesions that had been treated for 2 years from January 1991 to July 1992 at the Department of surgery in Chonnam National University Medical School.
The results were as follows:
1. Of 117 cases, the most common lesion was fibrocystic disease (56 cases, 47.9 %), followed by fibroadenoma (46 cases, 39.3 %).
2. Of 117 cases, 115 patients were female and 2 patients were male who suffered from gynecomastia.
3. The most prevalent age group in fibrocystic disease was 30 to 39 years and in fibroadenoma, 20 to 29 years.
4. The most common initial symptom was palpable mass without pain (78.3 % in fibroadenoma and 55.4 % in fibrocystic disease).
5. Most patients visited to our hospital within 1 year from onset (89.8 %).
6. The thumb tip sized mass was most common (38.2 %).
7. The most frequent site of benign breast lesion was upper outer quadrant (59.4 %),
followed central portion of breast (15.9 %). The right breast was slightly more frequently involved than the left (50.7 % versus 49.3 %).
8. The accuracy of mammography in fibroadenoma was 76.9 % and in fibrocystic disease, 73.3 %. The accuracy of breast ultrasonography in fibro adenoma was 95.2 % and in fibrocystic disease, 79.2 %.
